There were many different opinions of the American Colonists during the American Revolutionary period.
A Patriot was an American Colonist who wanted to break away from England and form a new country, uniting the 13 American Colonies.
A Loyalist was an American Colonist who supported the British and were loyal to England. They were also called 'Tories' and thought it was better not to break away from England. There were many advantages and disadvantages of being either a Patriot or a Loyalist.
